Ferdinand is an unincorporated town in Essex County in the US state of Vermont . At the last census in 2010 it had a total of 32 inhabitants. Ferdinand never became formally a town with its own administration as the population was never big enough. The town is administered by the Unified Towns & Gores of Essex County . It is part of the Berlin Micropolitan Statistical Area .

Geographical location

Ferdinand is centrally located in Essex County . The Nulhegan River flows through the town in the north in an easterly direction, and there are other small streams that flow into the Nulhegan River. The Paul Stream drains the south of the town . There are several small lakes in the Town area, the largest being South American Pond and Mile Pond . The surface is hilly, the highest point being the 967 m high Seneca Mountain Middle Peak .

Ferdinand was founded on October 13, 1761 with an area of ​​23,000 acres (about 60 km²) as one of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth . He named the town after a close relative of King George III. , Prince Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand (Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel) .

The Portland – Island Pond railway ran through Ferdinand with a stop in the Wenlock settlement. There was a post office in Wenlock, which closed in 1923. Ferdinand is one of five towns, the others being Averill, Glastenbury, Lewis and Somerset, in Vermont, which have never been populated to any great extent. The town was never organized.

In a west-east direction, Vermont State Route 105 runs through the northern part of the town from Brighton to Brunswick. There are only a few other streets in Ferdinand.
