Essex County is a county in the state of Vermont in the United States . The county seat is in Guildhall .

The county borders on New Hampshire to the east and Canada to the north and has an area of 1745 square kilometers, of which 22 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Coos County, New Hampshire, Grafton County, New Hampshire, Caledonia County , Orleans County, and Coaticook, Canada.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 6,459 people. There were 2,602 households and 1,805 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.56% white, 0.17% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.00% residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23% from others ethnic groups; 2.14% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.50% of the population.
Of the 2,602 households, 31.80% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.10% were married couples living together, 8.30% were single mothers. 30.60% were not families. 24.10% were single households and 11.50% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.60% of residents under the age of 18, 6.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.20% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 25.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 100.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 99.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,490 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,984. Males had a median income of $ 27,929 versus $ 20,583 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,388. 13.70% of the population and 9.90% of families are below the poverty line. 17.30% of them were under 18 years of age and 12.90% were 65 years of age or older.
