history

Averys Gore was founded on January 27, 1791. The Essex County area was part of eight other areas in six counties, five of which were Averys Gore or Averys Grant. The Grant included a total of 52,000 acres (21,044 hectares ) and went to Samuel Avery from Westminster. Only two of the areas existed independently until the 20th century, the others were taken over by neighboring towns. Averys Gore in Franklin County was split between the towns of Montgomery and Belvidere in 1963 .

Samuel Avery was born in Groton in 1731 . He served in a Connecticut Militia company during the Seven Years' War in North America . A trained attorney, he moved to Vermont prior to the American Revolutionary War , where he served in a Vermont unit. Avery had previously acquired a large portion of the John Henry Lydius Mohawk Tract . This was a Massachusetts Grant, which was later accepted by New York, for land in western Vermont. After Vermont rejected foreign land claims on its territory, Avery petitioned the legislature for a replacement for his grant. Being a highly respected Vermont citizen, this was granted, but since no contiguous piece of land of the appropriate size was available, he was assigned eight pieces of land over a five-year period, located in different counties. The lands could hardly be used economically, and no area developed into a town. He bought more land in Vermont, including land in Ohio, which he moved to in the late 18th century. In 1802 he moved to Oswego, New York, where he also owned a larger area. He built a mansion and died in 1806 as one of the richest men in the state.

The Averys Gore area in Essex County was never settled. Thus there are no infrastructural facilities and only a few unpaved roads.
