history
The Grant for Guildhall was given on October 10, 1761 by Benning Wentworth as part of the New Hampshire Grants to Elisha Hall and others. It is not certain how the name came about. There is only one other Guildhall , the London Guildhall . Settlement started in the southern part of the area in 1764, when it was still thought that this part would belong to the town of Lunenburg. The first settlers were David Page, Thimothy Nash and George Wheeler. More followed in the next few years. They brought their belongings and seeds in canoes from Northfield Massachusetts. During the American War of Independence , the town's residents were attacked several times by Indians or British loyal to the king. Homes were ransacked and several residents were taken captive.
The town's first documented meeting took place in March 1785, but records show that the constituent meeting had taken place earlier. Two secondary schools were built in the town, but both burned down.
