history

Bloomfield was founded on June 29, 1762 with an area of 23,040 acres (about 93 km²) as one of the New Hampshire Grants by Benning Wentworth under the name Minehead . The grant went to a group of Connecticut residents who also received grants that day for the neighboring towns of Averill, Lemington and Lewis. The name came from Minehead in England, where many of the grant recipients came from. The settlement started before 1800, but it was very hesitant. In 1830 the name was changed to Bloomfield by the Vermont Legislature at the request of residents.

The population development of Bloomfield has always been subject to great fluctuations. It peaked when many of the residents found work in the logging industry and running the Nulhegan Lumber Company's mills . Today there is only one settlement to the south of Bloomfield, at the intersection of Vermont Routes 105 and 102.
