Lunenburg is a town in Essex County in the US state of Vermont . At the last census in 2010 it had a total of 1,302 inhabitants. It is part of the Berlin Micropolitan Statistical Area .

Geographical location

Lunenburg is in southeast Essex County. The Connecticut River forms the eastern border with New Hampshire , several smaller tributaries of the Connecticut River drain the area of ​​the town. Neal Pond is located in the center of the town . The surface is hilly, the highest point is the 689 m high Temple Mountain .

City structure

The main settlement in Lunenburg is the Unincorporated Village Gilman , formerly Fitzdale . The village was renamed from Fitzdale to Gilman after its resident Isaac Gilman, a Russian immigrant. Gilman moved to New York City in the 1880s and later founded the Gilman Paper Company. Another paper company was in Village Fitzdale and when it was in financial difficulties Gilman bought it. He moved to Fitzdale and ran his business from there. Gilman identified himself so strongly with Fitzdale that he built two churches, one Roman Catholic and one Protestant. He just didn't build a synagogue because he was the town's only Jew. In 1921 the residents of Fitzdale renamed Gilman in his honor .

The Grant for Lunenburgh , initially with the spelling "Lunenburgh", was awarded on July 5, 1763 by Benning Wentworth as part of the New Hampshire Grants to David Page, Jonathan Grout and others. The town was named after Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand (Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel) in honor of the victory in Minden .

It is not certain when settlement began, probably before 1770; one of the oldest farms that had settled on both sides of the Connecticut River was called Lunenburgh .

The town's constituent assembly took place on September 11, 1781. There were originally 11 school districts in the town area.

Lunenburg is part of the Essex-Caledonia Supervisory Union with Concord, Granby, Guildhall, Kirby, Maidstone, Victory and Waterford . The Lunenburg Schools consist of the Lunenburg Elementary School and the Lunenburg Middle School and currently offer classes from kindergarten through eighth grade for 120 students.
