Concord is a town in Essex County in the US state of Vermont . At the last census in 2010, it had a total of 1235 inhabitants. It is part of the Berlin Micropolitan Statistical Area .

Geographical location

Concord is in the south of Essex County. The Connecticut River forms the eastern border with New Hampshire , the Moose River flows through the northwest , and there are other small streams that mostly flow into the Connecticut River. There are two larger lakes in the Town area, Miles Pond to the north and Shadow Lake to the southwest . The surface is hilly, the highest point is the 813 m high Miles Mountain .

Grist mill on the Moose River

Concord was granted on November 7, 1780 by the Vermont Republic to Dr. Reuben Jones of Rockingham, Vermont and others. The award was set on September 15, 1780. Many of the grant recipients were named Willard. The first meeting of the new landowners took place in Rockingham in 1784. There the area of ​​the town was divided. The settlement started in 1788, the first settler in Concord was Joseph Ball. The constituent assembly of the town took place on March 3, 1794. In 1856 the area now known as North Concord was added to the town.

The town's first grist mill was built by Joseph Ball, who was also the father of the first child born in the town. The town experienced its heyday in the 1880s, when timber and agriculture could feed more than 1,600 people. With the Concord Academy initially Columbian School , Reverent Samuel Read Hall founded the first training center for teachers in the United States in Concord in 1823.

US Highway 2 runs from St. Johnsbury to Lunenburg in a west-east direction parallel to the Moose River . Concord was on the Lunenburg – Maquam railway line .

The North Country Hospital & Health Care in Newport is the closest hospital to the town's residents.

education

Concord is part of the Essex-Caledonia Supervisory Union with Granby, Guildhall, Kirby, Lunenburg, Maidstone, Victory and Waterford . The Concord School offers classes from kindergarten through eighth grade.

The Concord School has a school library. There is no public library in Concord. The closest are in St. Johnsbury and Lunenburg.
