history
The Grant for Waterford was proclaimed on November 7, 1780 and awarded on November 8, 1780 under the name Littleton to Benjamin Whipple and others. The settlement of the town began in 1787. The town organized itself on May 6, 1793. The name of the town was changed in 1797 from Littleton to Waterford .
The name change became necessary because a town called Littleton had also been founded on the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River . Since the settlement areas in Waterford all bore the name Waterford , the name was changed to Waterford .
The Moore Dam, built in 1957, dams part of the Connecticut River, at a point where the Connecticut River previously plunged more than 110 meters into waterfalls. The largest conventional hydropower plant in New England was built here.
