US Highway 5 is a United States highway with north-south course, where the New England - states of Connecticut , Massachusetts and Vermont crosses. Some of the most important cities along the route include Springfield, Massachusetts , Hartford and New Haven . North from Hartford to St. Johnsbury in the state of Vermont, the road closely follows the course of the Connecticut River .
The northern terminus of the road is in Derby Line on the Canadian border, from where it continues into Québec , but under the number Québec Route 143 (until the mid-1970s this was called Québec Route 5). The southern terminus is in New Haven at the interstate with Interstate 91 . The overall course of US 5 corresponds roughly to the course of Interstate 91, which also runs from New Haven to Derby Line, where it changes to the name Québec Autoroute 55 .
