Geographical location

Wheelock is located in northwest Caledonia County, in the Green Mountains . There are a few smaller rivers that drain the town's area in a southeastern direction. They flow into the Passumpsic River . There are two smaller lakes in the Town area, Flagg Pond to the west and Chandler Pond to the east. The surface of the town is hilly, the highest point is the 843 m high Wheelock Mountain .

history

The Grant for Wheelock was given on June 15, 1785 in favor of the President and Trustees of Dartmouth College and Moor's Charity School . These institutions were founded by the congregational pastor, speaker and educator Eleazar Wheelock . The institutions were brought into such a position that the schools' debts could slowly be reduced. The grant comprised 23,040 acres (9,324 hectares ). Wheelock was named after John Wheelock , son of Elizar Wheelock, who was the second president of Dartmouth College at the time. Wheelock is the only town in Vermont that has been awarded to an organization outside of the state's territory.

Settlement of the town started in 1790 and the first settler was Joseph Page. The town's constituent assembly took place on March 29, 1792.

Nathan Lord, who was president of Dartmouth College in 1828 and who was in Wheelock to collect donations, offered the town's young men free access to college if they have the qualifications and from college be accepted. This offer was not accepted for the first time until fifty years later. When co-education was introduced in Dartmouth , this offer was extended to the young women of the town. So far, only eight residents have accepted this offer, one woman in her senior year of 1988 and the last one in her senior year of 2005.

Through the northeast corner of Town Wheelock, Interstate 91 runs north-south, from the Canadian border south. Vermont State Route 122 runs parallel to it . She connects Wheelock with Glover and Lyndon.

education

Wheelock is part of the Caledonia North Supervisory Union with Burke, Lyndon, Newark, Sheffield and Sutton . In Sheffield, Miller's Run School offers school classes from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. It is also attended by school children from Wheelock.

There is no library in Wheelock. The closest are in Lyndonville, Burke or Greensboro.
