Geographical location

Glover is located in southeast Orleans County. There are several lakes in the area of ​​the town. The largest are Lake Parker to the north and the centrally located Shadow Lake . In front is the Daniels Pond . To the west of the town is Sweeney Pond and to the south of Clarks Pond . Slightly south of Clarks Pond is Runaway Pond, which was created in 1810 by an environmental disaster. Tributaries of the Black River and Barton Rivers connect the lakes and flow in a northerly direction. The area of ​​the town is hilly, the highest peaks are the 658 m high Beach Hill and the 602 m high Fisher Hill .

The grant for Glover was given on June 27, 1781 to General John Glover and the men who had served under him in the American Revolutionary War . The town was named after General Glover. This was determined on November 20, 1783. Settlement began in 1793 and was initially slow.

Runway Pond

On June 6, 1810, an environmental disaster took place in Glover. 60 men wanted to dig a canal from what was then Long Pond to supply mills in the north with water that did not have enough water in the dry season. They dug the canal to Long Pond and found quicksand. This loosened and the water masses of the Long Pond poured through the valley towards the north to Lac Memphrémagog . The Long Pond emptied completely within 15 minutes. On their way, the up to 15 m high wall of water tore everything with it. Trees, houses, stones, cattle. No one was harmed. It took her six hours to get to Lac Memphrémagog. The path of the water can still be seen in the valley today, Vermont State Route 16 follows its course. The place is now known as Runaway Pond . However, the flood brought about a significant improvement in the soil due to the sediments carried with it from the pond.

Bread and Puppet Theater

In 1974 the Bread and Puppet Theater moved to a former farm and dairy in Glover . The doll museum, which was set up in 1963, has also been located there since 1998.

The Interstate 91 clips the Town to the northeast of Bartonim north to Sheffield in the east. From Barton in the north, Vermont State Route 11 runs south through the town. From it branches off in an easterly direction from Vermont State Route 122 to Sheffield.
