Geographical location

Jay is located in northwest Orleans County on the border with Canada . There are only a few and very small lakes in the area of ​​the town. Some smaller rivers flow through the town in an easterly direction. The area of ​​the town is hilly, especially in the west a chain of peaks of the Green Mountains runs through the town. The highest peaks are the 1176 m high Jay Peak in the Jay State Forest and to the north the 1036 m high Doll Peak , the 1047 m high North Jay Peak and the 795 m high Burnt Mountain .

The first grant for the town area went to the Wyllis family after a petition for land in the north in March 1780. The town should be called Wyllis . However, the Wyllis let the grant lapse. On March 13, 1780, the country was proclaimed again, this time under the name Carthage . However, no settlers were found. On November 7, 1792 the grant was awarded again. A third of the land went to Thomas Chittenden , the governor of Vermont, to whom the State of Vermont still owed 350 pounds in wages. The other two thirds of the area were granted on December 28, 1792 as a grant to John Jay , the former governor of New York, chairman of the Continental Congress and first chief judge of the USA, and to his associate John Crozine. Both had a decisive influence on the settlement of the land disputes between New York and Vermont and thus enabled Vermont to become the 14th state in the United States. The town was named Jay after John Jay .

The land given to Chittenden was measured by Curtis Elkins and divided into 76 equal parts. The first settler on one of the parts was Samuel Palmer in 1803. However, he had already left the area before the town could organize itself.

On August 29, 1805, the future settlers of the area given to John Jay and John Crozine met. It was decided that Curtis Elkins should also measure these areas and divide them into equal parts. This lasted until 1806, only then could the settlement start. Settlement was slow and on March 29, 1828, the first town meeting took place at which the town was organized.

Solomon Wolcott built the first sawmill in 1822 and the first school was built in the center of the town by Eli Hunt in 1831. Other companies followed: blacksmiths, tannery, carriage construction, wheel construction, joinery, coffin joiner and others. There were church congregations of the Baptist , Methodist and Christian Church . A post office was established in 1836 and operated until 1905.

After the Jay Peak Resort was built in the 1960s, the decline in population could be slowed down and the population increased again somewhat. Of the approximately 380 apartments in Jay, 230 are used as holiday apartments. There are bars, restaurants and shops for the ski tourists.

On November 10, 1943, a Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft crashed into the mountainside of Jay Peak in heavy snowfall. One crew member died.

The Vermont State Route 105 leads east to west of Richford in the west to the east Troy. It runs centrally through the town. In the south, Vermont State Route 242 also runs in a west-east direction from Westfield to Troy.
