Geographical location

Irasburg is in the center of Orleans County. There are only a few and very small lakes in the area of ​​the town. The Kidder Pond is located in the north of Mud Pond to the south. The Black River crosses the town centrally in a northerly direction. It has various smaller tributaries. The area of ​​the town is hilly, the highest peaks are the 467 m high Allen Hill and the 461 m high Butternut Hill .

Ira Allen

The grant for the town got on February 23, 1781 Ira Allen and other settlers. The settlement of the town started around 1798. The first settler was Caleb Leach. The town's first constituent meeting took place on March 12, 1803.

Allen bought their land from all the other co-owners of the grant, making him the owner of the town. He married Jerusha Enos in 1789 and gave her the town as a wedding present. When he lost his money, the land had to be auctioned to pay any outstanding tax debt. Iras and Jerusha's nephew and adopted son Heman bought the land and gave it back to Jerusha.

Irasburg was the capital of Orleans County from 1812 to 1886 when Newport became the capital. In 1815 the first courthouse and prison were built. The courthouse was replaced with a new one in 1847, the wooden prison with a stone building in 1838 and a granite building in 1862.

The Interstate 95 runs through the northeast corner of the Town of Derby in the north to Barton in the south. The US Highway 5 runs parallel to Interstate 95 a little further west of Coventry in the north to Barton in the south. In the center of the town, Vermont State Route 14 meets, which runs north-south from Coventry to Albany, and Vermont State Route 14 runs west-east from Lowell to Westmore.
