Orleans County is a county in the state of Vermont in the United States . The county seat is in Newport .

The county borders Canada in the north and has an area of 1868 square kilometers, of which 61 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Essex County , Caledonia County , Lamoille County , Franklin County , Brome-Missisquoi (Canada), Memphrémagog (Canada), and Coaticook (Canada).

Orleans County was formed on November 5, 1792 from parts of Chittenden County and Orange County.

As of the 2000 census , the county had 26,277 people. There were 10,446 households and 7,155 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.16% white, 0.37% African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% from the Pacific island area and 0.13% from others ethnic groups; 1.37% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.72% of the population.
Of the 10,446 households, 32.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.40% were married couples living together, 9.60% were single mothers. 31.50% were not families. 25.20% were single households and 10.90% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.10% residents under the age of 18, 7.10% between 18 and 24 years old, 26.80% between 25 and 44 years old, 25.90% between 45 and 64 years old 15.00% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.60 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.10 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,084 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,630. Males had a median income of $ 27,964 versus $ 20,779 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,518. 14.10% of the population and 10.60% of families are below the poverty line. 17.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 10.90% were 65 years of age or older.

There are also the census-designated placees for statistical purposes : Glover, Greensboro, Greensboro Bend, Irasburg, Lowell, Newport and Troy as well as the Unincorporated Village Beebe Plain , Craftsbury Common, East Charleston and West Charleston.
