Addison County is a county in the state of Vermont in the United States . The county seat is Middlebury .
geography
The county is located in west-central Vermont, borders New York to the west and has an area of 2,093 square kilometers, of which 99 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Chittenden County , Washington County , Orange County , Windsor County , Rutland County , Washington County (New York), and Essex County (New York).
The area is on the south east bank of Lake Champlain and the Hudson River . Two thirds of the area consists of the lowlands along these two bodies of water; only the eastern third of the area lies in the western foothills of the Green Mountains . The plain is largely used for agriculture; the dairy industry dominates. The wooded slopes of the Green Mountains are primarily used for the timber industry and secondarily for tourism.
The largest river is Otter Creek , which runs through the county from south to north and is navigable to Vergennes ; the highest point is Mount Abraham at 1224 m . The largest city and economic center is the administrative center of Middlebury .

The county had 35,974 people as of the 2000 census . There were 13,068 households and 9,108 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.86% white, 0.54% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.03% residents from the Pacific island area and 0.29% from others ethnic groups; 1.29% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.10% of the population.
Of the 13,068 households, 34.40% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.40% were married couples living together, 8.30% were single mothers. 30.30% were not families. 23.40% were single households and 8.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.02.


For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.90% residents under 18 years of age, 12.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.90% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.30% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 43,142 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,351. Males had a median income of $ 31,836 versus $ 24,416 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,539. 8.60% of the population and 5.10% of families are below the poverty line. 9.10% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.00% were 65 years of age or older.
