history

When Vergennes was founded in 1796 as a spin-off of the towns of New Heaven, Ferrisburgh and Panton, it was 1,200 acres in size . Some time later there was another cession of land from New Haven in favor of Vergennes, but this land did not fit the City of Vergennes. This land was incorporated as an independent town. Phineas Brown was elected as the first moderator of the meeting in the new town. He suggested the name Waltham after his home town, Waltham, Massachusetts, which the congregation accepted, and the new town was named Waltham. In 1804 a small part of Addison was added to the Waltham area and gave the town its present form.

The settlement of the area started shortly before the American Revolutionary War by the family of John Grisworld from Connecticut. Grisworld and four of his sons were captured by Indians and brought to Canada. He and three sons did not return until three years later; the fourth was now a sailor on a British ship. There are no further records of him. During the war, settlement in the town stopped and only after the war ended, settlers came back and new ones were added. Grisworld also returned to his family.
