Westmore is a town in Orleans County in the US state of Vermont . According to the 2010 census , it had a population of 350 on an area of ​​97 km².

Geographical location

Westmort is in the east of Orleans County on the ridge of the Green Mountains east of the main ridge. The highest point is the 1010 m high Bald Mountain . The Willoughby State Forest is south of the Town and the southern part of Lake Willoughby is located in the State Forest. Partly the slopes rise steeply there, like the steep slopes of the 848 m high Mount Pisgah . Other lakes in the town area are the centrally located Long Pond and the Bald Hill Pond to the east .

The village, which was originally called Westford , was founded on May 15, 1780 on an area of ​​23,040 acres (about 93 km²). Since there was already a town called Westford in Chittenden County , the name was changed to Westmore in 1787. The settlement of the area began from 1799; the first city assembly took place on March 29, 1802.

Since the western area of ​​the municipality consists of mountainous terrain, which is only suitable for timber industry, the agricultural settlements were concentrated in the east of the municipality, where good arable land was found. Around 1840 particularly robust crops such as potatoes and sugar beets were grown here; these specifications have largely been preserved to this day. In the years after the Second World War, however, the mainstay of tourism was added: Lake Willoughby , located in the community, is a tourist attraction. Eight companies rent out holiday homes; a hotel and a campsite complete the offer.

traffic

The railroad constructions that criss-crossed the country from 1848 passed Westmore; even large road constructions or airfields cannot be found in the remote area. The Vermont State Route 5A runs along the eastern shore of Lake Willoughby from north to south of Charleston in the north to Sutton in the south.
