Pomeroy Colton

Eben Pomeroy Colton (born February 11, 1829 in West Fairlee , Vermont , † September 10, 1895 in Irasburg , Vermont) was an American businessman and farmer who was lieutenant governor of Vermont from 1878 to 1880 .

Life

As Ebenezer Pomeroy Colton, but commonly known as E. Pomeroy Colton or EP Colton, he was born in West Fairlee, Vermont. His family moved to Irasburg when he was 14 years old. After finishing school he worked in construction, carpentry and agriculture.

He was married to Almira A. Bailey. The couple had three children.

Political background

Originally a member of the United States Whig Party , Colton joined the Republican Party in 1850 when it founded the Vermont sister party . He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1859 to 1860 and the Vermont Senate from 1870 to 1874. He was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 1876.

Colton was elected lieutenant governor in 1878 and held this office from 1878 to 1880.

He was an active Freemason ; he was also active in other civil and fraternal associations. Colton was the first Master of the Vermont National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry from 1872 to 1877 .

Colton died in Irasburg on September 10, 1895. His grave is in Irasburg Cemetery.
