Benning Wentworth awarded the Grant for Fairlee on September 9, 1761 to Josiah Chauncey, Joseph Hubbard, and others. The Fairlee Grant was part of the New Hampshire Grants . It also included the area of what is now the Town of West Fairlee. The settlement started in 1766, the first settler in Fairlee was John Baldwin. At West Fairlee, the first settler in 1778 was Elijah Blood. He settled in what is now known as Blood Brook. On February 2, 1797, the western part was split off and the town of West Fairlee was founded. The border between the towns runs north-south and ran through the center of the original town.

Until the opening of the Ely Copper Mine , a copper mine in the southeast of the town of Vershire, the main occupation of the residents was agriculture and timber. The town was divided into Village Canton, now known as West Fairlee Village, and West Fairlee Center in the Middle Brook Valley. After that, many miners moved to West Fairlee, the town experienced a large population growth and the population rose to over 1,000 residents. A hotel, three retail stores, a furniture store, a jewelry store, a carriage store, a blacksmith, a sawmill, a rental stable and other traders and craftsmen settled here.

The mine grew to become the largest copper mine in the United States, but went bankrupt in 1883. There were two more attempts, from 1885 to 1890 and again in 1900, to revive the mine, but they failed. After the mine was closed, the miners moved out of West Fairlee, along with many traders, and the population fell by half.

In 1909 a fire destroyed part of the village, including the hotel, several shops, the rental stall and some residential buildings. A year later, a second fire destroyed the Whitney Block , a large commercial building that housed most of the village's remaining shops. Seven years later the Eastman Block where the last shops were still burned . Little was rebuilt as the shrunken population no longer needed these shops. West Fairlee reverted to farming as an economic base.
