Settlement began in 1784, and the first settlers included Elijah Paine , John Paine, John Smith, Joseph Crane and Josiah Lyman. The town's constituent assembly took place on September 4, 1787. In 1839, the town's shop burned down after a barrel of rum spontaneously exploded.

There are two derivations for the name of the town. One says that the name goes back to Judah Williams, one of the grant recipients, the other says that the name goes back to Williamstown , Massachusetts , which was named after Ephraim Williams, founder of Williams College. The second variant is usually thought to be the more likely, as many of the settlers in Williamstown were from near Williamstown, Massachusetts.
