Geographical location

Vershire is centrally located in Orange County. There are only a few small lakes in the town area, such as Whitehouse Pound to the northwest. The Ompompanoosuc River with its tributaries flows through the town in a southeastern direction, it flows into the Connecticut River . The surface is hilly. The highest point is Colton Hill, 727 m high in the southwest . Vershire is located in central Vermont on a plateau of the Green Mountains , the so-called Upper Valley .

The Grant for Vershire was proclaimed on November 7, 1780 by the Vermont Republic . The town was previously known as number 7 . The grant was given on August 3, 1781 to Abner Seelye and 64 others, many of whom never visited the town. The first settler was Lennox Titus in 1779. The name changed frequently. First known as number 7 , the town was called Malden , then Caley , then Arlington and finally Vershire . The name Vershire is said to be composed of Ver (mont) and (New Hamp) shire . In 1878 the town was renamed Ely and in 1882 back to Vershire.

The town is rural, with farms, sawmills and grist mills. There were several copper mines in Vershire after the Civil War . In the mid-19th century, there was heavy immigration to Vershire. The Vermont Mine Company attracted large numbers of Welsh and Irish immigrants and the population rose to nearly 1900 people. In 1883 the mining company got into financial difficulties and went bankrupt in 1888. Within a few years around 1500 people left the town and in the 1960s only a little more than 200 people lived in Vershire. At that time, The Mountain School of Milton Academy was established. This independent school offers academic preparation for college on an organic farm.

education

Vershire is part of the Rivendell Interstate School District with West Fairlee, Westshire, Fairlee and Orford, New Hampshire . There is no public school in Vershire, and students from Vershire attend Westshire Elementary School in West Fairlee. It offers school classes from kindergarten to fourth grade.

The The Mountain School of Milton Academy offers a semester program that academic high school juniors motivated offers the opportunity to live on an organic farm in rural Vermont and work.
