Juhani Mursu (* 1940 in Oulu , Finland ) is a former Finnish and Swedish weightlifter . He won in the World Cup 1969 in Warsaw in the middleweight two medals.

Career

Juhani Mursu started lifting weights at the Oulun Pyrintö sports club as a teenager . He developed well and in 1963 already managed 375 kg in the Olympic triathlon in the middleweight division. He achieved the same performance in the Finnish championship in 1964, in which he came on the podium for the first time with 2nd place. In the following years he continued to develop in terms of performance and was the first Finnish middleweight champion in 1967. His performance was 390 kg (125-115-150). In 1968 he was again Finnish champion with 397.5 kg. This year he was used for the first time at the European Championships, which took place in Leningrad . He only reached 12th place in the strong field with 395 kg (125-120-150). He was not nominated for the 1968 Olympic Games.

Juhani Mursu achieved another leap in performance in 1969. He again became Finnish champion with 417.5 kg and finished behind Evgeni Smirnow at the Baltic Cup in Zinnowitz , GDR , with 440 kg (142.5-127.5-165) the USSR, which came to 450 kg, took 2nd place. At the World and European Championships in Warsaw in the same year he achieved the greatest success of his career. He scored there middleweight in the Olympic triathlon 437.5 kg (145-127,5-165) and finished with this performance in the overall results of the 3rd place and won with his performance of 145 kg in each pressing the silver medal .

After this championship, Juhani Mursu came to no more assignments for Finland at the international championships due to differences with the Finnish Weightlifting Association. However, he continued to train and achieved a duel performance of 445 kg in the middleweight division in 1970 and even 465 kg in 1971 (155-137.5-172.5). He also set a new unofficial world record in 1971 in Turku in two-armed press.

Juhani Mursu, who has both Finnish and Swedish citizenship, then decided to switch to the Swedish Weightlifting Association because he wanted to continue his international career. He therefore joined the Swedish club Sandvikens Atletklubb . His first appearance in the Swedish national team was less fortunate, however, because he made three failed attempts at the 1972 European championship in Constanța , which left him unplaced in this championship.

He was even more unlucky when preparing for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , because fourteen days before the start of the Games he suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon during training, which meant that he could only follow the competitions in Munich from a sick bed.

From January 1, 1973, the weightlifting world association abolished the two-armed pushing. From this point on there was only the Olympic duel, consisting of two-armed tearing and two-armed pushing. Juhani Mursu was particularly badly affected by this measure, because pushing with both arms was his favorite discipline. After his recovery, he tried to continue his weightlifting career in 1974 and came in the Swedish championship 1974 in the middleweight division with 285 kg on the 2nd place. He was also used at the European Championships in 1974 in Verona and came there in middleweight with 290 kg (125-165) on the 10th place.

Thereafter, Juhani Mursu achieved no more outstanding achievements and ended his career in 1980. He lives in Oulu again today.
