Viktor Grigorjewitsch Kurenzow ( Russian Виктор Григорьевич Куренцов ; born April 15, 1941 in Vitebskaya Woblasz ) is a former Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Viktor Kurentsow grew up in Siberia and trained as a locksmith at the Novokuznetsk ironworks . He started lifting weights at the age of 17 and made good progress under his coach Yevgeny Jali. After joining the Soviet Army, progress continued because of the better training conditions. At the age of 21 he took part in the USSR championships for the first time in 1962 and took a good sixth place in the middleweight division (up to 75 kg body weight).

In 1963 he beat world champion Alexander Kurynov at the Moscow Grand Prix and was nominated for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . There he was surprisingly defeated in the fight for the gold medal by the Czech Hans Zdražila , who was in excellent shape . In the next few years he dominated the World Championships and made up in Mexico City in 1968 , what he had failed to do four years earlier, the Olympic victory . Although he still achieved top performances, the young Vladimir Kanygin was preferred to him at the World Championships in 1971 and the Olympic Games in 1972, who was knocked out of the game in Munich after three unsuccessful attempts. Viktor Kurenzow was a blond, handsome technician who lifted very elegantly and looked rather slim for a weightlifter.
