Braintree is a town in Orange County , Vermont , United States with a population of 1,246 (2010 census).

Geographical location

Braintree is located in the southwest of Orange County. The Third Branch White River flows centrally in a south-easterly direction with various smaller tributaries through the town. There are few smaller lakes in Braintree. The area of ​​the town is hilly, with a larger range of hills to the west. There is also the highest mountain in the town, the 923 m high Braintree Mountain .

There were three settlement areas in Braintree , West Braintree with a station on the Windsor – Burlington railway line , a post office, a hotel, shops and a sawmill. Hutchinsons Village , now known as Peth, is on Spears Brook. The post office used to be located there, as well as a church, a shop, and oil, clover and saw mills. In 1840, these shops moved, except for the mills in East Braintree also known as Snowsville after Jeremiah Snow, who settled in 1814 and built a sawmill and a gristmill. Today there are still two settlement areas: West Braintree and East Braintree .

The first settlers included Silas Flint, Samuel Bass, Jacob and Samuel Spear and others. The first settlers came from Braintree , Massachusetts, and the town was also named Braintree after their previous home. The town's constituent assembly took place on March 7, 1788.
