Geographical location

Orange is in the northwest of Orange County. The largest lake in the town is the Thurman W. Dix Reservoir to the west . In the center of the town is the Orange Town Forest and to the northwest of this is the Barre City Forest . In the northeast, the Groton State Forest protrudes into the town. Several smaller watercourses run through the area. They flow east into the Waits River and west via tributaries in the Winooski River . The surface is hilly and the highest point is the 936 m high Knox Mountain .

The Grant for Orange was given by the Vermont Republic on November 6, 1780 to Ebenezer Green, Amos Robinson and others. This was officially confirmed on August 11, 1781. Settlement started in 1793 and the first settler was Joseph Williams. On March 12, 1796, the constituent city assembly took place. A meeting room was built in 1823. Up until then, town meetings took place in private homes.

The Village Orange is located in the center of the town. There was a post office in the village from 1823 to 1921. The Village East Orange in the southeast corner of the town had a post office from 1850 to 1908. From 1850 to 1900 there were several dairy farms in orange, the farmers were largely self-sufficient. Vegetables, poultry and the sale of milk were the main sources of income for the families. This gradually changed with the advent of automobiles. Many commuters who work in Barre City now live in Orange.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

US Highway 302 from Barre to Groton runs through the town in a west-east direction . The Vermont State Route 110 branches off to the south of this, and through the southwest corner of the Town to Washington. In the east, Vermont State Route 25 branches off to the southeast to Bradford.

There is no hospital in Orange. The Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin is the closest hospital.

Orange is part of the Orange North Supervisory Union , which includes the towns of Orange, Washington and Williamstown. The Orange Center School is located in Orange .

Orange does not have its own library. The closest libraries are the Calef Memorial Library in Washington and the Aldrich Public Library in Barre.
