history

Plainfield, located between Montpelier and Marshfield, was one of the lands that were not part of the New Hampshire Grants in 1777, i.e. could be awarded as a grant by the Vermont Republic . James Whitelaw, James Savage and William Coit received the grant in 1788. Whitelaw bought this land for a group of settlers from Scotland. They called the area St. Andrew's Gore. Whitelaw later worked as a surveyor and received land in Plainfield as payment. The name was derived from either the Scottish town of St Andrews or the University of St Andrews .

In the autumn of 1791 the first settlers were Seth Freeman from Weldon and Isaac Washburn from Croydon. They built huts on the Newbury Trail, which connects Boston with Canada. Today the Barre Country Club is located there. They returned a year later and staked out their lots. When the town was surveyed in 1793, there were three other parcels.

According to local lore, James Chapman was a settler and he, like others, did not like the name of St. Andrews. So he offered to donate a new set of books for the town, if he could choose a different name. This offer was accepted and in November 1797 St. Andrew's Gore was renamed after Plainfield, his home in Connecticut. However, Plainfield did not yet have town rights. This did not happen until 1867.

In 1797 about thirty families settled in the area and by 1800 there were twice as many. Since the southwestern part of Plainfield was settled first, the first town meetings and the first trade fairs were held there. A forge and a tavern were built. Agriculture, due to good grazing land and the cultivation of sugar maple, was the basis of life in the early Plainfield. A tannery, grist mill, sawmills, pottery, a factory for potash and blacksmiths were other opportunities to earn a living. In 1884 a wagon factory was built and a cheese factory was established.

In 1873 the Montpelier – Wells River railway reached Plainfield and local trade benefited from this connection. During this time, the healing power of the local mineral springs was recognized and used. Guest houses were built, including the Spring House and Plainfield House . However, this ended with the Spring House fire in 1884.

After the Second World War , rail trade declined and was replaced by truck transport. As a result, many jobs have been lost and many residents have been forced to move to other areas.

Religions

The first church in town was organized in 1799 and was named The Church of Christ in Plainfield . Dissatisfied members withdrew from this ward in 1802 and founded a Methodist church , Grace United Methodist Church , in 1819 . There is also a Baptist congregation, the Macedonia Baptist Church , as well as congregations of the Congregational Church , the Unitarian Universalist Association , the Church of God of Prophecy and the Society of Friends .
