Moretown is a town in Washington County in the state of Vermont in the United States . In 2010 there were 1658 inhabitants in 696 households on an area of ​​104.2 km².

Geographical location

Moretown is centrally located in Washington County. It borders Waterbury in the north and Middlesex in the northeast, Berlin in the east, Northfield in the southeast , Waitsfield in the southwest and Duxbury in the west .

The settlement area extends along the Mad River, which flows through the area of ​​the town in a northerly direction and flows into the Winooski River . State Route 100 B runs along the Mad River. The Winooski River forms the border with the neighboring towns of Waterbury and Middlesex to the north. The US Highway 2 runs on the northern border south of the Winooski River, in the area of ​​Moretown, the US Interstate 89 also known as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway north of the Winooski River. The 484 m high Mount Cobb is located in the northwest of Moretown.

history

The Moretown Grant was declared as part of the New Hampshire Grants on June 7, 1763. The original grant was 9,307.8 hectares (23,040 acres ) which have been parceled out with straight, neat lines for the new owners. However, mountains, valleys, rivers or other topographical features were not taken into account. Settlement began around 1790, initially in north Moretown and near Duxbury Corners. The first town meeting took place in the house of Joseph Hazeltine in 1792.

Along the northern border of the town on the territory of the neighboring town of Middlesex, Interstate 89, also known as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway, runs parallel to the Interstate of US Highway 2 . Both follow the course of the Winooski River. The Vermont State Route 100B branches off from Highway 2 and leads north to south sighting centrally by the Town. Vermont State Route 100 branches off from here in the southwest of the town in a northerly direction.

Moretown Elementary School is located on State Route 100B . It includes a preschool, kindergarten, and grades 1 through 6. Middle and high school students go to Harwood Union High School. Moretown also has a public library, the Moretown Memorial Library.
