history

The town was founded in 1782 and named after Stephen Fay from Hardwick, Massachusetts, the owner of the Green Mountain Tavern, also known as Catamount Tavern , in Bennington. The Catamount Tavern was the headquarters of the Council of Safety and the Green Mountain Boys before the revolution. Five of Stephen Fay's seven sons fought in the Battle of Bennington . Among them the future Secretary of State of Vermont Joseph Fay , whose older brother John was the first to be killed in the Battle of Bennington.

The land was parceled out and sold in 1788, mostly to speculators. These bought land to aid the government of the independent Vermont Republic , but did not settle on the land. The town organized itself in 1805. The first school for 25 students opened in 1812. In 1800 10 families lived in the area of the town, in 1860 the town had 800 inhabitants.

The soil in the town's area is unsuitable for agriculture due to the steep slopes and thin surface. Sheep breeding, on the other hand, was widespread, as well as the timber industry and a very small amount of talc was mined.

After the unrest and hardship in Ireland, many Irish settlers immigrated and in 1860 about a third of the population were from Ireland. The farmland was relatively cheap and the Irish immigrants use this as an opportunity to start over. However, after a few years they were forced to give up their farms and many moved away.

Until shortly after World War II, the economy and the population shrank, only when Roland Palmedo built the Fayston Stark Mountain ski area as the second largest ski area in Vermont, the population grew again. There are now two major ski areas in the town, the Mad River Glen and Mt. Ellen.
