City structure

There are several villages in the town, Moscow was named after an incident in the flour mill by Samel Rich. When a large millstone was lifted into it, it fell, making a noise that was compared to the sound of the bells of Moscow during the siege by Napoleon.

Adamant was previously called Sodom - supposedly because the employees of the Granite Company there behaved like a bunch of hooligans - and as such had its own post office. After residents complained about the name, the Granite Company owner suggested the name Adamant. Today only the Sodom Pont reminds of the old name.

Pekin was named after Beijing . A farmer had contacts with a missionary in China who was sending him Chinese wheat to Vermont. He planted this and the field developed into a signpost: right behind the Peking wheat . Eventually the position of the field came to be known simply as the Pekin.

history

Calais got its name from Colonel Jacob Davis, who, along with Stephen Fay and 86 other men, held the Grant for Calais on October 1, 1780 from the Vermont General Assembly . Davis initially settled in Montpelier . This town also got its name from him. The first settlers to clear the land reached Calais in 1787. The first city meeting was held in Charlton , Massachusetts on November 20, 1780 .

The charter was signed on August 15, 1781. At Christmas 1783 the land surveying committee submitted a plan of the parish to the community and on that day they were assigned to the owners of the grants by lot.

A small sawmill was established in Gospel Hollow by Colonel Davis in 1793. Likewise a flour mill in the same year. He called the area around the mills "Calais Center". In 1828 there were nine sawmills and other companies in Calais, producing wooden watches, axes, scythes, shoes and bells. There was a schnapps distillery, a starch factory and a wool factory. After most of the land had been cleared, the farms also became larger and easier to work with.

The Walton's Directory from 1899 lists 4 post offices, 2 cheese factories, 6 mills, 12 shops selling everything from animal feed to fashion, 1 hotel, 3 stone bridges, 3 active churches and 2 doctors for Calais. The Great Flood of 1927 also caused severe damage to bridges and roads in Calais. In the 1930s the roads were expanded. State Route 14 was laid out in 1949.
