The Horace Wilkinson Bridge is a road bridge over the Mississippi River between Port Allen and Baton Rouge , Louisiana , USA . It is one of the ten largest cantilever bridges in the world.

The six-lane bridge leads Interstate 10 at a clearance height of 53 m (175 ft ) over the approximately 800 m wide river.

The closest bridge upriver is the Huey P. Long Bridge in Baton Rouge, 7.5 km away , a rail and road bridge opened in 1940. In local parlance, the two bridges are often referred to as the old and new bridges. Down the river, the Sunshine Bridge, which opened in 1964 between Donaldsonville and Sorrento, is 60 kilometers away .

The Horace Wilkinson Bridge was planned under the direction of Frank M. Masters in the Modjeski & Masters office , which had already designed the first bridge for the Crescent City Connection in New Orleans . The bridge was built between 1963 and 1968; the steel superstructure of the main bridge was built by the American Bridge Company .

The Horace Wilkinson Bridge consists of a 738.5 m (2423 ft) long and 28.7 m (94 ft) wide steel truss - cantilever bridge on reinforced concrete pillars . It has a 376 m (1235 ft) wide main opening and two 181 m (594 ft) wide side openings. This is followed on both sides by three bridge fields with parallel-belted lattice girders and an overhead carriageway. Their spans on the right bank are 78 + 79 + 78 m and on the left bank 141 + 130 + 148 m. The steel bridge structure is a total of 1387 m (4550 ft) long.

On both sides close approach bridges of reinforced concrete , which lead to the distribution structures Interstate 10th The driveways seem to climb steeply to the bridge, which is visible from afar in the flat country, but the slope is actually only 3.75%.

The bridge is used by an average of more than 100,000 vehicles per day.
