Elijah Paine (* 21st January 1757 in Brooklyn , Windham County , Connecticut Colony ; †  28. April 1842 in Williamstown , Vermont ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Federalist Party ), of the state of Vermont in the US Senate took .

Paine attended Connecticut public schools before serving in the Revolutionary War. In 1781 he graduated from Harvard College ; a successful law degree followed, after which he was admitted to the bar and began to practice in Windsor (Vermont). He also worked as a farmer and settled in Williamstown. He later started a clothing factory and sawmill in Northfield .

Politically, he first became active in 1786 as Secretary of the Constitutional Convention of Vermont. From 1787 to 1790 he was a member of the State House of Representatives . Between 1791 and 1795 he was a judge on the Vermont Supreme Court .

In 1794 Elijah Paine was first elected to the United States Senate; he was re-elected six years later. However, as early as September 1, 1801, he resigned his mandate to become a judge at the Federal District Court for Vermont. He held this office until his death in 1842. In 1812 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
