Karl Benedikt Suttinger (born January 3, 1746 in Saathain , † March 18, 1830 in Lübben ) was a German Lutheran theologian , philologist and teacher.

Life

Karl Benedikt Suttinger was born in Saathain in the Elbe-Elster region . Initially taught by a private teacher, Suttinger attended the Royal Saxon State School in Meißen from 1761 , where he remained until 1766. He then studied theology and philology at the University of Leipzig . Since his father died while still at school, the now relatively poor Suttinger was forced to give private lessons. In this way he finally came to the house of the Leipzig councilor Frege , whose daughters he taught in the meantime. He completed his studies in 1775 with the title Mag. Theol. in Wittenberg.

At the suggestion of the Lübben rector Karl Traugott Thieme and the mayor Boden, Suttinger became vice rector of the Lyceum in Lübben in 1779. Thieme left the Lübben school in 1783 and went to Merseburg . Suttinger applied for the position that became vacant and then took over the rectorate of the school the following year .

His professional work in Lübben was shaped by the reforms he initiated in the urban school system. Initially, the Lyceum was more like a simple boys' school, but after a few years Suttinger established subject classes for mathematics, natural sciences and geography. In addition, foreign languages such as French were taught in Lübben. He also succeeded in setting up a girls' school in Lübben . Suttinger repeatedly had to struggle with financial and administrative problems.

The financial situation did not improve when Lübben moved from the Kingdom of Saxony to the now Prussian province of Saxony as a result of the Congress of Vienna in 1815 . Due to the precarious financial situation, the Lübben Lyceum was finally closed as a higher education institution in 1817. A further improvement of the urban school system could therefore only take place gradually in the following period.

Shortly before his death in the spring of 1830, Sutinger's fiftieth anniversary in office was celebrated with a large audience. At that time there were three school facilities in Lübben with a five-class boys 'school, a three-class girls' school and a four-class elementary school, which were under the same rectorate.
