Barbara W. Snelling

Barbara Tuttle Weil Snelling (born March 22, 1928 in Fall River , Massachusetts , † November 2, 2015 in South Burlington , Vermont ) was an American politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1993 to 1997 .

Life

Barbara Weil Snelling was born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1928. She earned a bachelor's degree from Radcliffe College , Cambridge , Massachusetts. In 1947 she married Richard A. Snelling , who was governor of Vermont from 1977 to 1985 and from 1990 until his sudden death in 1991. The couple had four children.

As the First Lady of Vermont, she was the founding chairman of the Friends of the Vermont State House , a group working to restore the State House. After her husband's death, she ran for Vice-Governor of Vermont as a member of the Republican Party in 1993. She held this office for two terms after being re-elected. In 1996, she started an election campaign for governor of Vermont, which she broke off due to a brain hemorrhage.

After her recovery, she returned to politics and twice served in the Vermont Senate . The first term of office lasted from 1997 to 1999, the second term from 2001 to 2003. During this time she was a member of the Appropriations Committee , the Natural Resources and Energy Committee and the Health and Welfare Committee .

In 2000, Snelling was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the United State Institute of Peace , a bipartisan association that promotes peace and conflict resolution through education and training.

In 2002 she gave up her Senate seat and Governor Howard Dean transferred that office to her daughter Diane Snelling .

In addition to her political career, she was active in the education sector in Vermont. She was a member of the Shelburne School Board , Chair of the Board of Champlain at Union Valley High School, President of the Vermont School Board Association , Vice President for Development and External affairs at the University of Vermont from 1974 to 1982, and Curator at Champlain College and the Shelburne Museum .

She received honorary doctorates from Norwich University and Middlebury College . The University of Vermont awarded her an honorary Doctor of Laws .

Snelling founded Snelling and Kolb, Inc. , an international consulting firm for non-profit organizations, and served on the boards of directors of Chittenden Bank , the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce , the Vermont Council on Quality and the New England Dollars for Scholars .
