Leighton P. Slack

Leighton P. Slack (born June 18, 1867 in Woodstock , Vermont , † March 31, 1938 in Montpelier , Vermont) was an American lawyer , judge and politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1910 to 1912 . He was a judge on the Vermont Supreme Court from 1914 until his death .

Life

Leighton Prosper Slack was born in Woodstock, Vermont. He graduated in Ludlow at the Black River Academy and was active during law school as a teacher.

Slack was admitted to the bar in 1892 and worked first in Barre and later in St. Johnsbury in the profession.

As a member of the Vermont Republican Party, he was Mayor of St. Johnsbury and from 1898 to 1900 District Attorney for Caledonia County . He was a member of the Vermont Senate from 1904 to 1905.

Slack won the election to lieutenant governor in 1910. He held this office until 1912.

In 1914 he was appointed Associate Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court and moved to Montpelier. Slack held this office until his death.

During World War I , Slack chaired the Public Security Committee, a committee convened by the governor to mobilize volunteers and supplies for the war.

He has served in the Vermonter and American Bar Associations and the Vermonter Historical Society.

Slack was married to Estelle H. Mears Slack (1871-1896) and her second marriage to Leah Elsie Mears Slack (1877-1966). The daughter Estelle Slack (1901–1986) comes from this marriage.

Slack died in Montpelier on March 31, 1938. His grave is in Durant Cemetery in Cabot .
