Tomás Mac Síomóin

Tomás Mac Síomóin [ ˈtʊmɑːs (m) ək ˈʃiːmoːnʲ ] (* 1938 in Dublin ) is an Irish author and biologist.

Life

He was born the son of a civil servant. After attending a school of the Christian Brothers in Dublin, he completed a degree in botany at University College Dublin , which he graduated in 1960. From 1960 to 1961 he studied plant virology at the Landbouwhogeschool Wageningen in Wageningen in the Netherlands . This was followed by a research activity at Cornell University in Ithaca in the USA in the field of virology . He holds a PhD in plant pathology and has taught at several universities in the Republic of Ireland. From 1973 he was employed as a lecturer in biology at the College of Technology Dublin .

As a writer, he has written short stories and essays in the Irish language . The works were published in the Irish newspapers Comhar and Feasta . He translated his work into English himself . In 1977 he lectured in Gaelic-speaking areas of Scotland and in Edinburgh .

Awards

At the cultural festival Oireachtas na Gaeilge he won prizes for short stories and poems in 1974, 1975 and 1977. In 1977 he also received an award from the Arts Council of the Republic of Ireland .
