Robert Pierpoint

Robert Pierpoint (born May 4, 1791 in Litchfield , Connecticut , † September 23, 1864 in Rutland , Vermont ) was an American politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1848 to 1850 .

Life

Pierpoint was born in Litchfield, Connecticut. When he was seven years old, he moved to live with his uncle in Manchester , Vermont. He began to study law at 16 and was admitted to the bar in 1812. He then worked first in Manchester and later in Rutland.

In the British-American War he was a tax collector and from 1820 to 1839 he held the office of town clerk for Rutland County , Vermont. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1819 and 1823 and a member of the Colonial government in the Thirteen Colonies from 1825 to 1831 . He was also a delegate to the Vermont Constitutional Assemblies of 1822 and 1828. He was probate judge for Rutland County from 1832 to 1833 and from 1832 to 1834 clerk in the Vermont House of Representatives.

As a member of the Whig Party , he was a member of the Vermont Senate from 1836 to 1840 . Pierpoint was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1848 to 1850. He was a judge at the jury from 1850 to 1856.

Pierpoint was a founding member of the National Life Insurance Company . In 1857 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Vermont. He was a trustee of the University of Vermont and received honorary degrees from that university and from Middlebury College .

He died in Rutland on September 23, 1864. His grave is in Rutland's Evergreen Cemetery.
