Ralph A. Foote

Ralph Albert Foote (born January 22, 1923 in Proctor , Vermont , † July 16, 2003 in Middlebury , Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1961 to 1965 . His grandfather, Abram W. Foote, was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1921 to 1923.

Life

Foote was born in Proctor, Vermont. After graduating from Amherst College in 1943 , he served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and took part in the Battle of Okinawa .

He graduated from Albany Law School in 1949 and became a lawyer in Middlebury, Vermont. He returned to active duty with the Marines during the Korean War .

As a member of the Republican Party of Vermont, Foote was District Attorney for Addison County from 1950 to 1956 . In 1956, he won the Vermont House election and served two terms. He was also chairman of the Judiciary Committee .

He won the election to lieutenant governor in 1960 under Republican governor F. Ray Keyser . When he lost the office of governor to Philip H. Hoff in 1962, Foote won his re-election. In 1964 Foote ran against Hoff, but lost this election.

Most recently, Foote was with his Conley and Foote law firm in Middlebury, where he also served as President of Addison County and the Vermont Bar Association. He was chairman of the Judicial Conduct Board and served on the Republican committees for Middlebury and Addison Counties.

Ralph Foote died in Middlebury on July 16, 2003. He was cremated and buried in Evergreen Cemetery in West Cornwall, Vermont.

He was married to Nancy Dickey Foote for more than 50 years. The couple had five sons: Brian, Peter, Cory, Richard and Anthony.

Foote was the grandson of Vermont Lieutenant Governor Abram W. Foote .
