Benjamin Williams (born July 8, 1876 in Fair Haven , Vermont , † February 11, 1957 in Proctor , Vermont) was an American lawyer and politician who was Lieutenant Governor of Vermont from 1931 to 1933 .

Life

Williams was born in Fair Haven, Vermont. He graduated from Norwich University and subsequently worked as a lawyer, director of the Vermont Marble Company, and president of the Proctor Trust Company .

As a member of the Republican Party of Vermont, Williams was town clerk of Proctor from 1906 to 1918 , and from 1906 to 1908 secretary for civil and military affairs for the governor of Vermont Fletcher D. Proctor .

Williams was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1917 to 1921 . In 1920 he was elected to the Vermont Senate for a term .

In 1928 he returned to the House of Representatives and was elected Speaker of the House.

He won the election for lieutenant governor in 1930. His term lasted from 1931 to 1933. The Republican nomination for governor in 1934 he lost to Charles M. Smith .

Williams died in Proctor on February 5, 1957. His grave is in Fair Haven's Cedar Grove Cemetery.
