Life

Edward Harrington Deavitt was born in Moretown, Vermont, to Thomas Jefferson Deavitt and Carrie E. Harrington Deavitt. He grew up in Montpelier, graduated from the University of Vermont in 1893 and attended Harvard Law School in 1896 . He first worked as a lawyer in Boston and later in Montpelier.

In addition to his work as a lawyer, Deavitt worked as a businessman. He has served on the boards of directors of several banks and public utilities and on the board of directors of a granite plant in Montpelier.

As a member of the Republican Party , Deavitt served on the State Committee responsible for lawyer admission exams and as a bankruptcy advisor. In 1906 Deavitt won the election as State Treasurer. He held this office until 1915.

In the mid-1920s, Deavitt was an adviser to Governor Franklin S. Billings , after which he became State Commissioner for Finance.

Deavitt was a member of the City Council of Montpelier from 1923 to 1926 and Mayor of Montpelier from 1926 to 1930.

In 1928 Deavitt lost the Republican primary for governor of Vermont. Successful incumbent John E. Weeks argued that the Mountain Rule , which would have limited his term of office to two years, would not work as he would be the best candidate to help build Vermonts after the great flood . Political observers rated Deavitt's challenge to Weeks as a half-hearted attempt to uphold the Mountain Rule.

Deavitt was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives in 1930. He was also elected Speaker of the House of Representatives and was a member of parliament from 1931 to 1933. After his tenure ended, he returned to his business activities and became President of Green Mountain Mutual Fire Insurance Company .

Edward Deavitt married Mary Tromblee on December 25, 1902. He died in Montpelier on October 2, 1946.
