Henry M. Bates (born July 2, 1808 in Hartland , Vermont , † August 30, 1865 in Northfield , Vermont) was an American politician who was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1854 to 1860 .

Life

Henry Miner Bates was born in Hartland, Vermont. His parents were Jacob Bates (1764-1815) and Charity Paddock (1772-1815). His maternal grandfather, Thomas Paddock (1723–1786), had participated in the American Revolutionary War ; a few generations later, a descendant of Henry M. Bates relied on the descent of Paddock in order to be accepted into the patriotic men's association "Sons of the American Revolution", which has similarly strict acceptance criteria as its female counterpart, the Daughters of the American Revolution .

Initially, Bates was the cashier of Northfield Bank in Northfield, Vermont. When the Bank of Orleans was founded in Irasburg (Vermont) in 1830 , he was one of its cashiers. Ira H. Allen, the son of Ira Allen , was a President of the Bank of Orleans .

For the Orleans County Henry M. Bates was from 1839 to 1850 as chief of administration (County Clerk) worked. As a member of the Republican Party , he was in 1846 in a deputy in the Vermont House of Representatives . He served as Orleans County Senator in the Vermont Senate in 1851 and Vermont State Treasurer from 1854 to 1860.

Henry M. Bates married on September 17, 1832 in Middleborough ( Massachusetts ) Nancy Farrar Chapman (1815-1849). They had a son and two daughters.
