Elisha Payne Jewett

Elisha Payne Jewett (born June 5, 1801 in Lebanon , New Hampshire , † August 19, 1894 in Montpelier , Vermont ) was an American businessman , banker and politician who was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1846 to 1847 .

Life

Elisha Payne Jewett was born to Nathan Jewett (1767–1861) and Ruth Payne (1770–1828) in Lebanon, New Hampshire. His mother, Ruth Payne Jewett, was the daughter of Elisha Payne . Elisha Payne Jewett grew up in Montpelier and attended local schools there. At the age of 15 he began training with Daniel Baldwin, a local dealer.

At the age of 21, he started his own business career by joining the company Hubbard & Jewett and Jewett, Howes & Co as a partner. Jewett was later involved in railway construction, so on some sections of the Central Vermont Railway and the Great Western Railway in Ontario . He owed his business success that he later became a landowner. He was also President of the Bank of Montpelier and a member of the Board of Directors of Montpelier Savings Bank. Jewett was also one of the original commissioners for the Montpelliers Green Mount Cemetery.

Jewett served in the military as a colonel and a member of the staff of Charles Paine when Paine was governor of Vermont. A member of the Whig Party , Jewett was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1846 to 1847 and was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives in 1855 . He became a member of the Republican Party when it was founded in the 1850s and was one of the delegates to the United States' presidential election in 1872 .

In 1861, Jewett married Julia Kellogg Field. The painter Ruth Payne Burgess was her daughter. Jewett died in Montpelier on August 19, 1894. His grave is in the Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier.

The Elisha Jewett home at 157 State Street is part of the Montpelier Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
