Ruth Payne Burgess (born October 11, 1865 in Montpelier , Vermont , † March 11, 1934 in New York ) was an American naturalistic painter of portraits , still lifes and genre painter .

Life

Ruth Payne Jewett was born in Montpelier, Vermont, to Elisha P. Jewett and Julia Kellogg Field Jewett. Her grandparents were Captain Nathan Jewett and Ruth Payne, daughter of Elisha Payne . She attended Mary A. Burnham School in Northampton , Massachusetts .

She met her future husband, John William Burgess, in Vermont through a mutual friend, the artist Thomas Waterman Wood . Burgess was the founder of the Political Science Department at Columbia University . She married John Burgess on September 2, 1885. Burgess was first married to Augusta Thayer Jones, who had died in 1884.

Ruth Payne Burgess has been described as an artist who is "highly intelligent, well educated and an accomplished musician". Burgess and her husband had a son, Elisha Payne Jewett Burgess. In 1905 they owned homes in New York City and Montpelier. After John Burgess retired, they lived in Newport , Rhode Island , in a house called "Athenwood" and in Brookline , Massachusetts.

John William Burgess died in Brookline on January 13, 1931, Ruth Payne Burgess on March 11, 1934. Her funeral took place on March 14. This was interrupted by the arrest of her son Elisha, a mining engineer. Elisha Burgess had been charged with failure to pay spousal maintenance and support for his child.

education

Ruth Payne Burgess studied at Barnard College , National Academy Museum and School and the Art Students League of New York under George de Forest Brush , Kenyon Cox and James Carroll Beckwith . She also studied in Europe and worked as a painter in Italy and Germany. In Germany she painted the portrait of Prince August Wilhelm .

Career

Burgess painted portraits, including Nicholas Murray Butler , the President of Columbia University, A. Barton Hepburn and Admiral Charles Edgar Clark .

Her work was shown in nine exhibitions at the National Academy of Design from 1897 to 1906 and also from 1924 to 1933. A report from the Newport Annual Exhibition in 1915 quoted a visitor as saying, "The picture I like best is this head of Mrs. Burgess, it is more natural and lifelike than any picture on the whole show". Her work also included oriental topics.

In 1899, Burgess joined the National Association of Women Artists and the Woman's Art Club of New York , where she served as president from 1905 to 1910 and contributed to its financial growth.

She was able to rely on friends who donated money and also contributed money herself. Your donation of five hundred dollars to the association formed the basis for a one hundred dollar award that could be awarded for five years. Burgess was also president of the Art Students League for a while .

In 1928, 1930 and 1931 she had solo exhibitions in the Milk Galleries in New York.

Burgess also belonged to other associations. She was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts of Hartford , the American Watercolor Society , the Society of New York Painters, and the Allied Artists of America . Burgess was a patron of the Metropolitan Museum of Art .
