William Henry DuBois

William Henry DuBois (born March 24, 1835 in West Randolph , Vermont , † May 14, 1907 ) was an American businessman, banker and politician who was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1882 to 1890 .

Life

William Henry DuBois was born in the Village West Randolph to Earl C. and Anna Lamson DuBois. He attended local schools and while studying at West Randolph Academy he worked in his brother's shop. At the age of eighteen he went to Boston and worked as an accountant in the wholesale store, a shoe and boot shop, for his uncle Wales Tucker. In 1856 he became a partner in James Tucker & Company , a wholesaler of boots and shoes in Boston. He worked there successfully until 1864, but his health suffered.

DuBois returned to Vermont and after two years his health was restored. He went to New York in 1867 and became a partner in the boot and shoe wholesaler DuBois, Magovern & Company. In the fall of 1872 he retired, returned to Vermont and built a house there. He was interested in education and helped found the West Randolph Grades School , one of the best schools in Vermont in its day. He has been the Treasurer of Randolph since Randolph was founded as a Town. The town did not have its own bank until then. Recognizing the need, DuBois created the Randolph National Bank of West Randolph. He was the bank's first president. He was also Chairman of the Board of the West Randolph Water Commission and was one of the Auditors of the Town of Randolph.

As a member of the Republican Party , DuBois was elected to the General Assembly by Randolph in 1876. He served on the education and banking committees. In the same year, he was appointed inspector of finance by Governor Horace Fairbanks . Redfield Proctor confirmed this in 1878 and Roswell Farnham confirmed this in 1880. He held this office for six years and in 1882 he was elected Treasurer of Vermont. He held this office for eight years. He was the first official to recommend that the Vermont government introduce a direct tax on companies. Governor Proctor supported this proposal and the law was passed.

In 1892 he was elected to the Vermont Senate for Orange County . He was chairman of the Finance Committee and was a member of the Standing Committee on State and Court Costs. He was a member of the railway committee and several technical committees.

William H. DuBois married Anna Eliza Gilbert (1844–1887) on January 1, 1862. The couple had nine children, four of whom died in childhood. The DuBois were active members of the West Randolph Baptist Church . On June 5, 1888 DuBois married Adaline L. Moulton (1839-1907) for the second time. William Henry DuBois died on May 14, 1907 in Randolph. His grave is in the South View Cemetery in Randolph.
