John Spaulding

John Spaulding also John Spalding (born January 16, 1790 in Sharon , Vermont , † April 26, 1870 in Montpelier , Vermont) was an American businessman , judge and politician who was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1841 to 1846 .

Life

John Spaulding was born to Reuben Spalding (1758-1849) and Jerusha Carpenter Spalding (1768-1827) in Sharon, Vermont. In 1813 he moved to Montpelier and worked as a clerk for James Langdon. He later became a partner of Chester Hubbard in the trading company Hubbard & Spalding ; In 1821 he founded Langdon & Spalding together with James Langdon . When James Langdon wanted to retire, Spaulding bought him out and founded the company John & Charles Spalding . In 1840 he retired and occupied himself with agriculture.

He was President of the Old Bank of Montpelier and President of the Vermont Mutual Fire Insurance Company . A member of the Whig Party , he was a judge in Washington County in 1840 and State Treasurer of Vermont from 1841 to 1846.

His brick house on State Street in Montpelier is known as the John Spaulding House . Spaulding was one of the first supporters of the abstinence movement . He refused to sell alcohol in his shop and was one of the first to refuse to offer alcohol at a public gathering in his home.

John Spaulding married Sarah Collins in 1814 ; they had five children, three daughters and two sons. Spaulding died on April 26, 1870 in Montpelier.
