Frank H. Davis

Frank Hamilton Davis (born June 13, 1910 in New York City , † April 2, 1979 in Burlington , Vermont ) was an American businessman and politician who was State Treasurer from 1969 to 1975 .

Life

Frank H. Davis was born in New York City on June 13, 1910, the son of Frank Hamilton Davis (1883–1926) and Elizabeth Wilson Clark (1884–1957). His parents divorced in 1917. Davis grew up with his mother and stepfather Walter Guest Kellog. Davis attended school in New York City and St. Paul's School in Concord , New Hampshire .

He then worked on the New York Stock Exchange for Carlisle & Jacquelin.

In 1942, Davis left the New York Stock Exchange and signed up for service with the United States Coast Guard Reserve during World War II . He took part in the Atlantic battle and also in battles in the Pacific Ocean . He was honored with the rank of lieutenant colonel at the end of the war and moved to Burlington, Vermont. There he opened the state's first coin laundromat and was involved in other businesses. In the financial industry he was a consultant, first at FI DuPont and later at WE Hutton.

As a member of the Republican Party , he was a member of the Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives. He was chairman of the Burlington Housing Authority and has worked for the Burlington City Committee and the Chittenden County GOP Committee . Davis was Treasurer of the Burlington City Republican Committee .

Frank H. Davis was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1966 to 1969. In 1968 he was elected State Treasurer of Vermont. He held this office from 1969 to 1975. He lost his re-election in 1974 to Stella Hackel . Since neither of the two candidates was able to win an absolute majority in the election, an election was held by the Vermont General Assembly in accordance with the Vermont constitution . Hackel won it with 164 votes to 16.

Davis married Katherine Simmons in 1931. They had two children and were divorced in 1938. Davis married Virginia Hewitt in 1942 and had four other children with her. He died in Burlington on April 2, 1979.
