Stella Hackel-Sims born Stella Bloomberg, married Stella Hackel (born December 27, 1926 in Burlington , Vermont ) is an American politician who was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1975 to 1977 and director of the United States Mint from 1977 to 1981 was.

Life

Stella Bloomberg was born in Burlington. She attended local schools and graduated from the University of Vermont . She graduated from Boston University with a law degree in 1948 . She then worked as a lawyer in Burlington and later in Rutland City .

In 1956, now married, she was elected Rutland Grand Juror . In 1973 she was appointed occupational safety commissioner and was president of the Rutland County Bar Association that same year. As a member of the Democratic Party , she successfully ran for the office of State Treaser of Vermont in 1974. She held this office for one term. She was the first woman to be elected to this office. In November 1976 she ran unsuccessfully for governor of Vermont. After the end of her tenure as State Treasurer of Vermont, she was City Attorney of Rutland. She was nominated by President Jimmy Carter in October 1977 for the position of director of the United States Mint. This was confirmed by the US Senate and in the same year she was appointed director of the United States Mint, a federal agency primarily responsible for minting the US dollar. She held this position until 1981. During her tenure, the US Mint issued the Susan B. Anthony dollar . After leaving office, she lived in Arlington and Naples

In 1949 she married Donald H. Hackel (1925–1985).
