Samuel Mattocks

Samuel Mattocks also Mattoxs (born December 30, 1739 in Middletown , Colony of Connecticut , † January 18, 1804 ibid) was an American captain of the Continental Army and politician who was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1786 to 1800 .

Life

Samuel Mattocks was born to James (1694–1766) Mattocks and Sarah Peirce Mattocks in Middletown, Connecticut. Mattock moved to Hartford and worked as a wig maker. He then joined the Continental Army and served as captain of the 8th Connecticut Regiment. He retired from active service on April 20, 1779.

After leaving the army, Mattocks moved to Tinmouth , Vermont. There he ran a farm and became active in politics. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1781 to 1785 and served on the Governors Council in 1785. In Rutland County he was Assistant Judge from 1783 to 1788 and Chief Judge from 1788 to 1793, then Assistant Judge again until 1794. He was State Treasurer of Vermont from 1786 to 1800. His tenure as State Treasurer began in the Vermont Republic and he accompanied Vermont's admission to the Union, which took place on March 4, 1791.

Mattocks returned to Middlebury, Connecticut in 1797. He lived there until his death. He died on January 18, 1804. His grave is in Middleburys Washington Street Cemetery.

Samuel Mattocks married Sarah Birdwell (1738–1812) on March 14, 1763. The couple had five children, three of whom died in infancy or childhood. Her son John Mattocks later became governor of Vermont.
