Roswell Farnham (born July 23, 1827 in Boston , Massachusetts , † January 5, 1903 in Bradford , Vermont ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Vermont from 1880 to 1882 .

Early years

In 1840 Farnham came to Bradford, Vermont with his father. He attended the University of Vermont until 1852 . After that he worked as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, Roswell Farnham began his new job as a partner in a law firm. From 1859 to 1862 he was also a public prosecutor. During the civil war he rose from lieutenant to lieutenant colonel until he retired from military service in 1863. He served in a regiment made up of volunteers from Vermont. After 1863 he worked again as a lawyer.

Political rise

Roswell Farnham was a member of the Vermont dominant Republican Party , whose executive committee he was a member in Vermont from 1865 to 1868. From 1869 to 1870 he was a member of the State Senate . He then served on his state's education committee for three years. In 1876 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , where Rutherford B. Hayes was nominated as the party's presidential candidate. Farnham was also one of its electorates in this year's presidential election. In 1880 he was elected the new governor by an overwhelming majority.

Governor of Vermont and another résumé

Farnham began his two-year term on October 7, 1880. As governor, he campaigned for a reform of the school and prison system. He also tried to get companies from other areas of the United States to invest in Vermont. After his tenure on October 5, 1882, Farnham worked again as a lawyer and devoted himself to his private affairs. After 1882 he no longer held any political office. Since 1849 Roswell Farnham was married to Mary Elizabeth Johnson, with whom he had three children. Governor Farnham died in January 1903.
