Deane C. Davis

Deane Chandler Davis (born November 7, 1900 in Barre , Washington County , Vermont , † December 8, 1990 in Montpelier , Vermont) was an American politician and governor of the state of Vermont from 1969 to 1973 .

Early years and business advancement

Deane Davis attended Spaulding High School until 1918 . After completing a law degree at Boston University , he was admitted to the bar in 1922. He then started working in this profession in his hometown of Barre. Davis was also a member of the city council at the time. Between 1924 and 1926 he also worked as a lawyer for this city. From 1931 to 1936 he was a judge on the Vermont Supreme Court . He was then a partner at the well-known law firm Wilson, Carver, Davis and Keyser until 1940 . All four partners would later make political or legal careers in Vermont. Deane Davis and Stanley C. Wilson became governors of Vermont, Carver became attorney general for that state and Keyser became a Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. From 1940 he also worked for the National Life Insurance Company . In the company he made it to the position of CEO in 1968. Davis was also on the board of directors of other companies and companies and was considered a successful businessman.

Vermont governor

Until 1968 Davis had held no political office other than his time on Barre City Council. He had built a reputation for himself in Vermont due to his legal and business career. Although he was initially considered an outsider, also because of his age, he was able to prevail in the Republican Party primary against James L. Oakes , the Attorney General of Vermont. He then won the actual elections against Lieutenant Governor John Daley , the Democratic Party candidate .

Deane Davis took up his new office on January 9, 1969. After re-election in 1970, he was able to remain in office until January 4, 1973. As governor, he pushed through a value added tax against considerable opposition, with the help of which the budget deficit was to be reduced. During his reign, some laws to improve environmental and water protection were passed. In addition, Governor Davis operated an administrative reform of the state authorities.

Another résumé

After the end of his governorship, Davis was a member of numerous organizations and associations. Among other things, he was President of the Cooperative Health Information Center between 1973 and 1975 . He was a member of the Civil Defense Advisory Council , was a member of the American Judicature Society and chaired the Vermont Morgan Horse Association . Deane Davis died in December 1990 at the age of 90. He was married twice and had four children.
