The Paderborn University Library, founded in 1972, has the task of providing research, teaching and studying at the University of Paderborn with scientific literature and information. To this end, it builds up local information resources, offers access to information that is relevant to the university around the world, ensures accessibility and delivery of the required documents, and promotes competence in information use and electronic publishing through advice and training.

Located in the middle of the campus, it sees itself as a central place for working and learning at the university.

The electronic, printed and other information media provided by the University Library are listed in its self-developed catalog, which is based on modern search engine technologies (ElasticSearch) .

For the members of the university, it provides an option for electronic publication (Open Access) via its publication service. It has a digitization center in which the University Library digitizes historical literature in compliance with the legal framework and - together with the University's Open Access publications - makes it available for use on the Internet.

In the national library ranking Library Index for Scientific Libraries (BIX-WB), which existed until 2015 , it consistently achieved very good places. It occupied one of the top places of all university libraries in Germany in terms of its electronic media inventory. It is also known for its long opening and loan times.

After the library was expanded to include a new reading room in 2013, the learning and library center is currently under construction, which is connected to the library via a bridge.

Dietmar Haubfleisch has been the leading library director since 2002.
